Where will it end?’” The Russians were so alarmed that within days of Nixon’s announcement, they invited him to Moscow and restarted stalled nuclear arms talks.Īside from frightening Russia, Nixon had another near-term policy aim. When Nixon announced he would visit the PRC, the news hit the Kremlin “like a bolt from the blue,” according to Georgii Arbatov, an adviser to then-Russian leader Leonid Brezhnev.Īrbatov added: “My colleagues said, ‘America will be China’s ally when Nixon visits Beijing, anything could happen. That indeed it did, say historians of Nixon’s diplomacy and Russian officials of the time. Conservative leader Barry Goldwater was persuaded by Nixon to support the trip on grounds that a rapprochement with China would terrify Soviet Russia. His credentials as a Cold War warrior helped to quiet right-wing dissent inside the Republican Party to his outreach. In hindsight, Nixon did not have much to lose and a lot to gain by opening up relations with China. “By opening relations with China we would catch Russia's attention and get more leverage on them through playing this obvious, China card,” Winston Lord, a staffer on Nixon’s national security team, later noted. In a speech in Shanghai he talked enthusiastically about “what we will do in the years ahead to build a bridge across 16,000 miles and 22 years of hostilities which have divided us in the past.”īut the number one priority of the opening with China was to frighten the Soviet Union, which had fallen out Beijing. In many ways Western leaders are grappling now with the same dilemmas and challenges he faced, and like Nixon they are not coming up with any easy answers.įor all of Nixon’s soaring rhetoric during the trip about what rapprochement would mean for America and China in the future, he was focused mainly, in fact, on near-term policy goals. So is the West turning away from Nixon’s vision of China, closing an opening he created and now set on the path of reversing what he achieved? The answer is no. “In both the United States and Europe, the severity of the health and economic crisis driven by the pandemic has raised the stakes for policy on China and - especially in the UK, Germany, France and the wider EU - is tipping the balance towards those who advocate for a harder line on China,” says Leslie Vinjamuri of Britain’s Chatham House. Western powers fear Beijing is out to re-shape the liberal world order, subscribing to a growing view that not only does the Chinese Communist Party want to ensure its continued rule at home but to make China the number one global power. They cite a growing military assertiveness by China with Asian neighbors, a crackdown on the former British colony of Hong Kong, predatory lending practices seemingly aimed at catching countries in a manipulative debt trap, and weaponizing commerce. It has given added impetus to an increasingly shared narrative in the US and in other Western democracies that China cannot be trusted, the result of a series of aggressive policy moves by Beijing, say Western officials. The coronavirus pandemic has triggered, say analysts, the start of an historic decoupling of the world’s two leading economies, America and China. Nixon with Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, and States Secretary of State Alexander Haig, walking in rose garden of the White House in Washington, June 6, 1973.įorty-eight years on, America and China are embarking on another perilous voyage, filled possibly with even greater uncertainty than encountered in the 1970s. Haig was taken aback when Kissinger left the Oval Office one day and told him, “Al, this fellow wants to open relations with China.” Haig responded: “Not a cold war warrior like Nixon.” To which Kissinger retorted, “I think he has lost control of his senses.”įILE - President Richard M. leader had shocked the world a few months before the trip by announcing his intention of undertaking one, a plan that surprised many in the White House, too, including Alexander Haig, one of Nixon’s advisers. Reminiscing later about the visit, Nixon said: “We were embarking on a voyage of philosophical discovery as uncertain, and in some ways as perilous as the voyages of geographical discovery of an earlier time.” “The week that changed the world,” was how Nixon dubbed his bold trip, which was pulled off after months of secret negotiations conducted by his then-National Security Advisor, Henry Kissinger. In 1972 US President Richard Nixon visited the People’s Republic of China, ending years of estrangement between the two countries and lifting the bamboo curtain China had been hidden behind since Mao Zedong launched his Cultural Revolution in 1966.

The hand-drawn backdrops are gorgeous, and even though this is an indie developed game, give it a sense of depth and larger-than-life that some adventure games miss. Since talking too much about the world would ruin the fun of exploring it, I’ll just end this section by saying that while the battles were fun, I wasn’t really sold on this game until I started trekking my way across Jotunheim. As an added bonus, you just might learn or relearn some mythology along the way. From the frozen wastes of Niflheim to the massive branches of Yggdrasil, each level presents you with dangers to navigate or puzzles to solve on your way to the encounter with that area’s Jotun. The Norse mythology-inspired levels are widely varied, beautiful, and deadly. Jotun: Valhalla Edition, developed by Thunder Lotus Games, depicts a world of Norse mythology through beautifully hand-drawn environments and characters, and a tale larger than life. It is fun and engaging, but as it turns out, the missing piece of the puzzle was the exploration.įor supposedly being a game about fighting enormous monsters, where Jotun really shines in its world-building. While it was a solid demo and enjoyable enough, it didn’t really wow me the way some others did. This combat system was on display at PAX East, where they allowed attendees to take a crack at the Winter Jotun (seen above). It’s actually a bit like Punch-Out : It’s not about reflexes and reaction times so much as learning attack patterns and how to counter them. This makes for a less frantic and more strategic style of fight not usually seen in one-on-one combat. The Jotuns’ attacks have huge buildups and tend to take a long time, but each attack fills so much of the screen that a last-second dodge is out of the question. The fighting is slow compared to many other games, but demands near-perfect planning and technique. There are two main focuses in Jotun : combat and exploration. Anytime I get near her, she moves so I cant and then hits me. Thanks to a strong sense of art direction and style, it becomes it's own beast, one that does what it sets out to do. Jera, I think She got me down to basically no health (but I think I have that thing that gave me more health). While that description makes the game sound isn't. You’re helped along by Thora’s narration and occasionally by helpful hints from the gods themselves. It’s a top-down adventure game where you battle against massive enemies using skill, strategy, and your trusty axe. Jotun is somewhat along the lines of Shadow of the Colossus, if it were done in the style of Bastion. This serves as a central hub, and gives an idea of the sheer scope of the in-game world. At launch, custom pronouns can be uploaded to the Gallery and used in English only.įor this first iteration of the feature we focused on pronouns. However, we plan on rolling out the feature to all 18 languages over time. Initially, the customizable pronouns feature will only be available in English. We’ll be working to improve the feature over time, so please let us know if you run into instances where the incorrect pronoun is displayed on this Answers HQ thread. While the feature has been fully tested, there may be instances where the incorrect conjugation of pronouns or the default pronoun of the assigned gender may still appear due to the intricacies of grammar in English. If you’ve chosen to use custom pronouns, the feature will automatically change pronouns that show up when referring to the Sim to match what you’ve chosen. You’ll see the ‘Custom Pronouns’ drop-down menu where you’ll be able to select from They/Them, She/Her, He/Him, and Custom Pronouns. To change the pronouns for your Sim, simply click on the ‘Hello, my name is…’ tab next to the plumbob. We’re happy to announce that as of today, you will be able to customise your Sims’ pronouns in Create A Sim (CAS) in The Sims 4 if your game is set to English. – The Sims Team Sims 4 latest update: What’s New? Let’s dive in and see what’s included in this update. Not only do we have bug fixes to share, but we’re also releasing the new feature of Customizable Pronouns in The Sims 4! We hope you enjoyed the visit from Callia Maebey! All kidding aside, summer is almost here and we’ve got an amazing update to share with you this month! We didn’t just meet you, but it was crazy. Sims 4 Latest Patch Notes: May 2022 update/s Although the game has gotten much better over time, here’s hoping that The Sims 5 builds on The Sims 4 and isn’t another refresh. As always, we take the patch notes verbatim from the official announcement on The Sims forums, and we edit only for style and brevity where required. It almost felt like a step backwards for the franchise as it was missing features that had already been introduced in previous entries in the series. The Sims 4 received mixed reviews upon its release with many criticizing the game’s lack of content. The expansion reintroduced mechanics similar to the ones we saw with The Sims 4’s Discover University, only this time focused on the high school experience for teens. The Sims 4 has so far seen twelve expansion packs, with the latest, High School Years, releasing this past July. Typically, EA releases a new mainline game every five or so years. This marks the longest wait we’ve had between mainline installments in the long-running franchise. So even if The Sims 5 is in development, there’s a good chance The Sims 4 will continue to be supported with additional content for at least the next year, or possibly longer.Īs I mentioned, it’s been over eight years since The Sims 4 was released. EA had mentioned plans to continue developing and releasing packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops for the game “into the foreseeable future.” The Sims 4 is also set to go permanently free to play on October 18 for PC/Mac and consoles. Grubb even mentions that the game is still “a very long way off.” However, given the age of The Sims 4 - which was released over eight years ago - it wouldn’t be surprising to see EA announce plans for The Sims 5.Īn announcement doesn’t necessarily mean The Sims 5 will release anytime soon, however. In announcing the special edition stream, EA only hinted that they’ll be sharing “more about what’s in the works” which could mean anything. In an earlier Game Mess Mornings video from Giant Bomb, the industry insider claims the announcement will “almost certainly” happen during the Behind The Sims Summit livestream on October 18. New rumors from industry veteran Jeff Grubb claim EA will announce The Sims 5 as early as next month. Just don't expect it to change your life. In summary, it's something to try if you're a fan of Starbucks' grocery store offerings or need a little jolt but don't want to commit to a cup of hot coffee or some refreshing exercise. I would give Loca Moca Java Monster a solid 5/10 with 10 being coffee-energy-drink heaven and 1 being actual cough syrup (well, Robitussin at least-have you tried that bilge?). The jury is still out on the amount of Buzz one can find in regular coffee. Thus, while it is not quite half the caffeine of coffee, but rather somewhat more than half, it does indeed contain less caffeine than a similar quantity of coffee. Coffee of the same quantity contains an average of 270mg according to WolframAlpha. According to, whose veracity I cannot verify, Java Monster contains 160mg of caffeine per 15oz can. I did some quick research on Java Monster compared to coffee in order to check their statements, and they're pretty accurate. Perhaps "Mean Bean" or "Big Black" would have been more my speed? (Stay tuned.)įrom an energy standpoint, Java Monster says it has "half the caffeine of regular coffee" but "wice the Buzz." Apparently "buzz" is now a proper noun? I didn't see any sort of trademarking in their statement, so I guess it's not a proprietary statement, but we should be aware that Buzz is now more than just a state of being caffeinated, at least as far as Monster is concerned. The other part-and this is more my own shortcoming than that of the drink-is that I'm not the biggest fan of the "moca" portion of Loca Moca. It reminded me of Starbucks' frappuccinos you can buy at the grocery store, but the taste was a little off (that's the Monster in it, I'm sure). The coffee taste is muted, which may be good for those who don't particularly like coffee-but then, why would you choose an energy drink that is part coffee in the first place? I, however, found that the mix wasn't all too pleasing. Unfortunately, as a mix between coffee and an energy drink, it is a jack of all trades (and hence a master of none). But Java Monster doesn't have any of the carbonated taste that typical energy drinks have. Normal Monster tastes decidedly "okay," somewhere in between Mountain Dew and medicine (I do see where people are coming from when they complain about energy drinks' taste). Thus, when I picked out Java Monster Loca Moca, I wasn't sure what to expect. The point is, while I think Starbucks' frappuccinos are delicious, I don't need to have candy-in-a-cup to enjoy my coffee. I also enjoy coffee, and usually don't put too many flavor-adjusters in it (a little milk or half and half, sometimes a packet of Splenda). I particularly like Red Bull (not the sugar free kind), a drink which I've heard many people refer to as tasting like " cough syrup," so take my review of this Monster drink with whatever salt grains you like. I haven't had dozens of them and I don't drink two a day or anything, but I will occasionally indulge, and I tend to enjoy the taste of them. Today's subject is right in the middle.įirst, know that I am somewhat of an avid energy drink fan. Because we've recently started this blog about everything and nothing, I thought it would be appropriate to write up a short review of my feelings on the beverage. Rating? 8.4 out of 10.I'm currently drinking a 15 fluid ounce can of Loca Moca Java Monster coffee + energy. So this drink should work pretty well for the average person. I don't mean to brag or anything but I can ingest 500 milligrams of caffeine a day and still be able to sleep at night. However, you have to take in to consideration that I am a caffeine junkie. It gave me a mid-level boost that lasted about 3 hours. Wow, a really nice blend but did it give me the kick in the pants that I needed? Well, the kick was alright but nothing over the top. Well before we get to the kick, what is in Monster Java Loca Moca? Well, it has 450 milligrams of potassium, 3.1875 milligrams of vitamin b2, 37.5 milligrams of vitamin b3, 3.75 milligrams of vitamin b6, 11.25 milligrams of vitamin b12, 1,000 milligrams of taurine, 400 milligrams of panax ginseng, and a 5,000 milligram energy blend consisting of l-carnitine, glucose, caffeine, guarana, inositol, glucuronolactone, and maltodextrin. Overall, this drink really pleased my palate like all the other Monster Javas. The taste is similar to a Starbucks Mocha but it is more creamy than the Starbucks. So, this is my review of Monster Java Loca Moca. This is no longer possible.) To check the currently stored password hashes, see the system catalog pg_authid. (Previous PostgreSQL releases supported storing the password on the server in plain text. If a password was encrypted using the md5 setting, then it can be used only for the md5 and password authentication method specifications (again, with the password transmitted in plain text in the latter case). The authentication method specification md5 will automatically switch to using the scram-sha-256 method in this case, as explained above, so it will also work. If a password was encrypted using the scram-sha-256 setting, then it can be used for the authentication methods scram-sha-256 and password (but password transmission will be in plain text in the latter case). This is controlled by the configuration parameter password_encryption at the time the password is set. The availability of the different password-based authentication methods depends on how a user's password on the server is encrypted (or hashed, more accurately). If no password has been set up for a user, the stored password is null and password authentication will always fail for that user. Passwords can be managed with the SQL commands CREATE ROLE and ALTER ROLE, e.g., CREATE ROLE foo WITH LOGIN PASSWORD 'secret', or the psql command \password. The password for each database user is stored in the pg_authid system catalog. PostgreSQL database passwords are separate from operating system user passwords. (Though SSL certificate authentication might be a better choice if one is depending on using SSL). If the connection is protected by SSL encryption then password can be used safely, though. The method password sends the password in clear-text and is therefore vulnerable to password “ sniffing” attacks. To ease transition from the md5 method to the newer SCRAM method, if md5 is specified as a method in pg_hba.conf but the user's password on the server is encrypted for SCRAM (see below), then SCRAM-based authentication will automatically be chosen instead. The md5 method cannot be used with the db_user_namespace feature. Also, the MD5 hash algorithm is nowadays no longer considered secure against determined attacks. It prevents password sniffing and avoids storing passwords on the server in plain text but provides no protection if an attacker manages to steal the password hash from the server. The method md5 uses a custom less secure challenge-response mechanism. This is the most secure of the currently provided methods, but it is not supported by older client libraries. It is a challenge-response scheme that prevents password sniffing on untrusted connections and supports storing passwords on the server in a cryptographically hashed form that is thought to be secure. In the past when I’ve wanted to explore production data for a Heroku-hosted Ruby on Rails app, I’ve primarily used heroku console and rake tasks. The method scram-sha-256 performs SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication, as described in RFC 7677. Rake tasks let you perform complex analyses, but make it difficult to explore data because each time you tweak your task to do something new, you need to commit, push to production, run the task, and wait for it to execute.Įach method has limitations though: heroku console makes easy to answer simple questions about your data, but makes it difficult to perform complicated analyses that take more than a few lines of code. Neither option makes it easy to quickly explore the data. Heroku makes this fairly easy using the pg:pull command: $ heroku pg:pull HEROKU_POSTGRESQL_MAGENTA mylocaldb -app sushi Step 1: Pull your production data into a local Postgres database Wouldn’t it be nice if you could quickly query your database and explore the results?įortunately there is a way using a combination of Heroku’s pg:pull feature and a Mac app called SQLPro for Postgres. If your local Postgres instance requires a user name and password, you can provide them via the command line as well: $ PGUSER=postgres PGPASSWORD=password heroku pg:pull HEROKU_POSTGRESQL_MAGENTA mylocaldb -app sushi Where mylocaldb is the name of a local Postgres database, sushi is the name of your Heroku app, and HEROKU_POSTGRESQL_MAGENT is the name of your database which you can obtain by running: $ heroku pg:info -a sushi To delete it beforehand, you can run: $ dropdb mylocaldbįor my own workflow combine them and use a Bash alias to make it easier to run: alias prdb="dropdb preceden_production_copy PGUSER=postgres PGPASSWORD=password heroku pg:pull HEROKU_POSTGRESQL_MAGENTA preceden_production_copy -app sushi" In order for this command to work, mylocaldb can’t exist when you run this command. We’ll cover tube amps of all types, whether you are looking for a combo or head unit, something with low watt output or an attenuator to reduce the output, great overdrive tone or clean tone, we’re sure to cover something that fits your needs.ģ. We’ll start this article by discussing the best small tube amps at each price point. This is why many amp manufacturers have outfitted their tube amps with power reduction switches and attenuators that allow you to push the power tubes at lower volume, essentially making it easier to overdrive the amp. However, for some players, the fact that you have to push the tubes in your power amp at very high volume to get the saturation that modern lead players are looking for makes tube amps impractical. The difference in power and signal clarity is one of the main reasons why you will find 5 Watt, 10 Watt, and 15 Watt tube amps priced in the same neighborhood as high quality 50, 60, and 100 watt solid state amps. Speaker impedance, which is the amount of resistance that a speaker offers to the current that flows through it, actually depends largely on the nature of the frequencies that the speakers are reproducing, and the hard clipped signals produced by solid-state amps strongly reduce the available power, giving them higher speaker impedance and less overall power. A low-wattage tube amp, of say 10 or 15 watts, will actually sound as loud or louder than a solid-state amp of 50 watts or more. Tube amps are often perceived as being louder than solid-state amps, which is technically true.
